Enable D-Link Boxee Box to Play DVD movies

This article mainly shows you how to backup and convert DVD for playback and streaming to D-Link Boxee Box.

The D-Link Boxee Box links to your network and connects to your TV or A/V receiver by way of its HDMI port to deliver high-definition audio and video (1080p). It supports a huge number of media codecs and can pass through Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio bit streams to your A/V receiver, too.

If you like to rip DVD movies from disc and store them on your network via D-Link Boxee Box, the following short guide shows you how to get it done. After ripping DVD to D-Link Boxee compatible H.264 .mp4 format with a third-party tool, you can put away the DVD collections and use D-Link Boxee to play and stream the DVD movies at ease.

Rip DVD for playback and streaming with Boxee

Things you need:

Download the dvd converter: Pavtube DVDAid (See other options) (if you are a Mac user, you can try DVDAid for Mac)

Then, let's begin the conversion process.

Step 1. Launch the DVD to D-Link Boxee converter and load DVD movies to the program. The clean main interface is showed below:

Step 2. Choose the MP4 format for D-Link Boxee Box. In the "Format" > "Common Video" column, find "MPEG-4 Video (*.mp4)" and choose it as the output format for playback or streaming.

Tip:

1. The Forced subtitle which I appreciate is also on the main interface and if you check this function, it could show the forced subtitles you chose in the output video.

2. If your computer have Nvidia CUDA/ATI AMD ready graphics card, you can have GPU encoding and the conversion would be faster.

3. If you like, you can click "Settings" to change the video encoder, resolution, frame rate, etc. as you wish. Keep in mind the file size and video quality is based more on bitrate than resolution which means bitrate higher results in big file size, and lower visible quality loss, and vice versa.

Step 3. Hit the "Convert" button to start the conversion. It may take some time to finish the conversion, and with this period, I just do some housework to wait it.

When the conversion is over, just click the "Open" icon to locate the output video and then transfer the files to your D-Link Boxee Box. So easy, right? Then I could enjoy these DVD movie collections on my tablet, pc and tv as I like.

* Why BDMagic: you won't have to buy another piece of software when turning to Blu-ray Disc.
* Why MPEG-4 .mp4 format: for a DLNA based media streaming device like D-Link Boxee, MPEG-4 .mp4 is the best choice because it's optimal for streaming between both home devices and mobile devices.

Refer to DLNA media format and transport model.

DVD playback with Boxee (via USB)

There are 2 USB port on the D-Link Boxee box, from which you can add an external USB storage. Copy ripped DVD to a USB stick and connect it with Boxee, and you'll be able to watch DVD with Boxee box.

DVD playback with Boxee (over the Internet)

You can setup a networked Windows PC as DLNA compatible media server. The Boxee HD media player can access DVD copy from PC as long as it is correctly connected to the Internet.

DVD streaming with Boxee

A D-Link Boxee box can be set up as a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device itself. Just plug in a large-capacity USB hard disk to the streaming player and it'll server like a media server. In that case you can stream DVD movies from Boxee to phones and tablets.

Set up D-Link Boxee as Media Server/NAS device

You can turn your Boxee Box into a media server or NAS (Network Attached Storage) by plugging in a USB storage device such as USB thumbrives or USB Hard Disks. The Boxee Box has 2 USB ports at the back in which you can plug in the USB storage you want to share in your network.

Here are the steps to share your USB storage into your network, turning your Boxee Box into a NAS:

1) Plug in a USB storage (HDD or thumb drive), make sure they are formatted before plugging (most of the USB Hard disks and thumbdrives are already formatted out of the box)

2) On the Boxee Box Menu, Go to Settings>>Network>>Servers and "Enable Windows file sharing"
